Trusting God in the Unexpected
“When Life Doesn’t Go According To Plan”
There are moments in life that divide everything into "before" and "after."
One phone call.
One doctor's appointment.
One diagnosis.
In an instant, the future you imagined changes.
You may have had plans, routines, vacations, retirement dreams, or simply the expectation that tomorrow would look like today. Instead, you find yourself navigating doctor's appointments, medications, paperwork, and decisions you never thought you'd have to make.
If you're anything like me, you may have asked God, "Why is this happening?"
I know I did.
I never imagined becoming a caregiver. It wasn't part of my plan. Like many caregivers, I was suddenly thrust into a role I didn't feel equipped for, carrying responsibilities I never expected while trying to hold together every other part of life.
What I didn't realize then was that while this season surprised me, it didn't surprise God.
He was already here.
When Life Changes Overnight
Caregiving has a way of reminding us how quickly life can change.
One moment you're planning the future, and the next you're learning medical terminology, organizing medications, and wondering how you'll make it through another day.
Unexpected seasons have a way of shaking our confidence because they remind us that so much of life is outside of our control.
But God isn't shaken.
Isaiah 41:10 reminds us:
"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Notice that God doesn't promise we'll never face difficult seasons.
He promises His presence in the middle of them.
Trust Doesn't Require Understanding
One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that trusting God doesn't always mean understanding what He's doing.
I wanted answers.
God offered His presence.
I wanted a timeline.
God offered today's strength.
I wanted certainty.
God reminded me that He is faithful even when I am not.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says,
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
I've read that verse many times, but it took walking through unexpected circumstances to truly understand it.
Sometimes trusting God simply means taking the next faithful step, even when you can't see the whole path.
God Is Present in the Ordinary
It's easy to look for God in the big moments.
But I've discovered Him in the ordinary ones.
In waiting rooms.
During long nights.
Over cups of coffee that grew cold.
While folding laundry.
While sitting quietly beside someone I love.
God doesn't only meet us on mountaintops.
He meets us in hospital rooms, kitchens, pharmacies, and wherever caregiving takes us.
His mercies truly are new every morning.
Some days those mercies look like unexpected peace.
Some days they're found in a friend's encouraging text.
Other days they're simply the strength to keep going one more day.
What Trust Looked Like for Me
There were days when my prayers weren't eloquent.
Sometimes all I could say was,
"Lord, help me."
Sometimes I cried in the car before walking into another appointment.
Sometimes I questioned whether I was strong enough.
Looking back, I can see that God's faithfulness wasn't found because life became easier.
It was found because He carried me through every difficult day.
Not all at once.
One day at a time.
Three Ways to Trust God Today
1. Be honest with Him.
God isn't afraid of your questions, fears, or tears. Bring them all to Him.
2. Ask for today's strength.
Jesus reminds us not to worry about tomorrow. Ask Him to give you exactly what you need for today.
3. Remember His faithfulness.
When fear begins to take over, look back at the ways God has already carried you. His faithfulness in the past becomes courage for today.
A Final Encouragement
If you're walking through an unexpected season, I want you to know something.
You are not alone.
God sees every sacrifice you make that no one else notices.
He sees the exhaustion.
He hears every prayer whispered through tears.
He knows the weight you're carrying.
And He promises never to leave you.
The road may not look anything like you imagined, but God's faithfulness has never depended on your circumstances.
He is still good.
He is still near.
And He will give you the strength you need for today.
Not all at once.
Just enough for the next step.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father,
When life feels uncertain, help me trust You even when I don't understand Your plan. Remind me that You are with me in every doctor's appointment, every difficult conversation, every sleepless night, and every ordinary moment. Give me strength for today, peace for tomorrow, and the assurance that I never walk this journey alone.
Thank You for being faithful, even when life feels anything but predictable.
